rpf2fivem vs Online FiveM Converters: Which One Fits Your Job?

What rpf2fivem does, what it needs, the problems users have reported on its issue tracker, and an even-handed comparison with converting in the browser, including the jobs where rpf2fivem is the better tool.

rpf2fivem is a free, open-source desktop program that turns gta5-mods.com vehicles into FiveM resources. It is a good tool, and for some jobs it is a better choice than any website, including this one. This guide describes it from its own documentation, lists the problems its users have reported, and sets out when converting in a browser is the simpler route.

What rpf2fivem is

rpf2fivem lives in the Frostcloud-Development/rpf2fivem-repository repository on GitHub, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Its README describes the goal as sparing you from switching between OpenIV and a pile of open text files. It credits CodeWalker and the earlier gta5rpf-to-fivem project by vscorpio as its foundations. The author, Avenzey, maintains a release thread and a usage guide on the Cfx.re forum.

At the time of writing, the newest entry on the Releases page is rpf2fivem@4.3.2-prerelease from 7 December 2025, and the repository was last pushed to on 9 April 2026.

What it does well

These features are taken from the README, the forum threads and the release notes:

  • A conversion queue. You add vehicles to a queue and start one run for all of them.
  • Local archives. Since release 4.3.1-patch5 (May 2025) it converts local .rar, .zip and .7z files through a "Select archive" button, so the mod does not have to come from gta5-mods.com.
  • Framework helpers. With the qb-core or qbx_core checkbox enabled before you queue a vehicle, it asks for name, brand, price, category and type and writes the entry for your vehicles.lua list.
  • Texture downsizing. With the optional NConvert package extracted into its folder, it can resize textures during conversion.
  • Output layout options. The author mentions a "Subfolder Name In Stream/Data" setting for organising files inside the resource.
  • Free, with no conversion limit, and the source code is public.

What it needs

The README lists two requirements: the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 Runtime and the Microsoft .NET 5.0 Desktop Runtime. The release thread adds that without them "the application will not convert properly". Both are Windows runtimes, and neither the README nor the thread gives instructions for macOS or Linux. We have not tested it under compatibility layers and make no claim either way.

Installation is a download and an extract: get the archive from the Releases page, unpack it, and optionally unpack NConvert into the same folder.

The program also has an option called "load encryption keys from gta executable". The release thread says to enable it "if you are encountering issues with extracting .rpf files", and the usage guide recommends turning it on. The documentation does not explain further what that option requires.

Problems users report

Each item below is a specific report, with its link. They are individual cases, several of them already closed, and they say nothing about how often the tool works without trouble.

  • Custom engine audio is not carried over. Issue #39, open since May 2025: a user reports that a model's custom audio files are in the archive but not in the converted folder.
  • The program does not open. Users reported this in issue #43, issue #44 and issue #46, all closed. The notes for release 4.3.1-patch6 (November 2025) say a startup crash caused by a failing update check was fixed.
  • Extraction errors. Issue #42, closed, shows the log line "Failed to extract dlc.rpf" with "Invalid slice pitch". The 4.3.2-prerelease notes say the texture handler was rewritten "to no longer crash due to slice pitches".
  • Same-named vehicles. In post 19 of the release thread, a user reports a crash when two vehicles have the same name.
  • Empty output. Not a bug report but the author's own note: if the output has only a manifest and a stream folder, "the program was unable to find a .rpf file and the vehicle is incompatible with this tool".

If rpf2fivem is not working for you, the author asks for an issue on GitHub with the latest log file and the vehicles you tried.

When rpf2fivem is the better choice

  • You have many vehicles to convert in one sitting. A queue beats pasting links one at a time.
  • Your mods are local files, or come from somewhere other than gta5-mods.com. Our converter cannot take those at all.
  • You want no cost and no limit.
  • You want the conversion to happen on your own machine, or you want to read the code that does it.
  • You run qb-core or qbx_core and want the vehicle list entry generated for you. What those entries look like is covered in the QBCore and Qbox vehicle shop guides.

When a browser converter is simpler

  • You are on macOS, Linux or a Chromebook, or on a machine where you cannot install runtimes. Converting without OpenIV describes that route.
  • You convert the occasional car and do not want to set up and update a desktop tool.
  • The desktop tool will not start or fails on a particular mod, and you want a second route for a car that has a gta5-mods.com page.
  • You want your finished conversions stored so you can download them again later.

On this site you paste the vehicle's page link into the converter and download a zip. The first 3 conversions are free; after that it is a one-time $15, with details on the pricing page. The limits are real: one mod at a time, gta5-mods.com vehicle pages only, and custom engine sound packs are not included, so those need the steps in adding custom engine sounds.

Whichever you use, check the result

The same checks apply to a resource from either tool. These run in your browser on any FiveM resource and are free to use, with higher limits on the paid plan:

Frequently asked questions

Does rpf2fivem work on Mac or Linux?

Its documentation lists only Windows runtimes and gives no macOS or Linux instructions. A browser-based converter works on any system with a browser.

Is rpf2fivem free?

Yes. It is open source under the MPL-2.0 licence, with no conversion limit.

Can rpf2fivem convert files that are not on gta5-mods.com?

Yes, since release 4.3.1-patch5 it accepts local .rar, .zip and .7z archives. Our converter does not.

rpf2fivem gives me a folder with only a manifest and an empty stream folder. Why?

According to the author, the program found no .rpf in the download and the vehicle is incompatible with the tool.

Does either tool convert custom engine sounds?

An open rpf2fivem issue reports that custom audio is not converted, and this site's converter does not carry sound packs over either. Set the audio up as its own resource.
