Short answer: the published rules prohibit using other people's intellectual property on a FiveM server, Cfx.re staff have said in writing that this covers real-world vehicles even with the badges removed, and nothing we could find says otherwise. Lore-friendly vehicles are the low-risk choice. The rest of this page shows the exact wording, who said it and when, so you can judge for yourself.
Note
This page separates four things: what the official documents say, what staff have said, what community members report, and what is unknown. They are not equally reliable. Everything was read on 10 October 2026.
What the official documents say
Two documents apply. Both are published by Rockstar Games, which has operated FiveM since 2023.
The Creator Platform License Agreement
The agreement at fivem.net/terms is headed "Creator Platform License Agreement" and marked "Last Updated: Sept. 10 2026". It does not contain the words "vehicle", "car" or "real-world brand". The relevant rule is general. Section 2.2 says:
"nothing in this Creator PLA permits the use of, and you are hereby prohibited from using, the Creator Services, Covered Games or any of the elements thereof in any manner that: (1) violates the rights of any third party, any applicable law, rule, regulation, or the Agreement"
Section 4 puts the responsibility on whoever runs the server: "you are responsible for: (1) any Server Content that you or others create, upload, or distribute through such Custom Server". Section 7.2 covers consequences: "Rockstar reserves the right to take Adverse Action in accordance with the Rockstar TOS against any user, Account, Creator Content, Marketplace Content, or Custom Server in the event of a breach of this Creator PLA, the Creator Policies, or the Rockstar TOS."
Section 1.3 makes compliance with the "Rockstar Games Mod Guidelines" a condition of using the platform.
Rockstar's Mod Guidelines
The Mod Guidelines are dated September 10, 2026. Under the heading "Do Not Infringe Rockstar Games or Third-Party IP" they say:
"Do not use protected elements of anyone else's intellectual property in your mod, including art, characters, music, photos, games, advertisements, brands or logos, real-world locations, etc."
Brands and logos are named. Vehicle body designs are not named in that sentence; the list ends in "etc." The same page also says: "We reserve the right to take down any mod or other user generated content at any time for any reason". It describes itself as a summary and not a licence, and points readers to the full agreement.
What staff have said
The most specific statement is in the Community Pulse, October 2023 Edition, posted on 13 October 2023 by titanium, whose forum title is "Cfx.re Core Team". It answers a question about the agreement that was in force at the time. The question was: "We removed all branded car badges from the real-world car models we use on our server – are we following the PLA restriction on third-party IP?" The answer begins:
"“De-badging” vehicles is a first good step but that alone does not mean your server is fully compliant with the PLA. You must fully remove all real-world vehicles from your server."
It continues: "We cannot allow custom assets or mods that infringe third-party intellectual property (IP). Real-world brands, unique vehicle designs, and 3D software models are generally protectable under trademark or copyright. If you use a real-world car model pulled from another game without permission, that could result in claims against your server by both the car company (brand, logo, car design) or the game developer (3D model)." And it ends: "What can you use instead? We encourage the community to get creative – design your own unique vehicles and brands!"
A later data point: in a forum thread from 13 September 2025, a user asked whether real-brand cars are allowed "even with logos removed". A forum administrator, TheIndra, replied with one word: "No".
What the community reports
These are statements by ordinary forum members, not by staff. We could not verify any of them.
- In a thread from September 2026, a server developer asked whether anyone had actually received a warning or takedown over debadged cars. Nobody in the thread described a first-hand case. One member answered that such vehicles "are not allowed" and that a server "will be suspended if found using" them, and added that there "is no specific rule on how much things have to be changed".
- In another thread the same month, members gave similar warnings and pointed the asker to the agreement and the 2023 post.
What these threads do show is that the question keeps being asked, and that the answers from regular members consistently point back to the 2023 staff statement.
What is unknown
- How enforcement works in practice. We found no published process, no numbers and no official list of actions taken over vehicles.
- Whether the 2023 answer has been restated for the 2026 agreement. We found no staff post that repeats it or withdraws it after 10 September 2026. The current documents are worded more generally than the 2023 answer.
- Where "inspired by" ends. No official source defines how different a model must be from a real car. That is a question of trademark, design and copyright law, which differs by country.
- Private and development servers. Neither document makes an exception for whitelisted, private or test servers. The agreement's terms apply to any "Custom Server". Whether a small private server is ever looked at is not something we can tell you.
The mod author's permission is a separate question
Platform rules are one layer. The author's own terms are another. Many uploads on gta5-mods.com state in the description or in a readme inside the download whether the model may be converted, edited or re-uploaded, and some say plainly that FiveM use is not permitted or needs permission. Read the description before you convert, and respect what it says. If it says nothing, ask the author. A model ripped from another game also carries that game developer's rights, as the 2023 staff answer points out.
What a converter changes, and what it does not
A converter repackages files. It takes the model, textures and data files from a single-player archive and lays them out as a FiveM resource: a stream folder, the meta files and a manifest. See how conversion works for the detail.
That changes nothing about who owns the model, what the author allowed or whether the car depicts a real product. A real-brand car is the same real-brand car after conversion.
This applies to this site too. We have pages organised by real car brand because that is how people search for mods on gta5-mods.com. Those pages are technical guides, not a statement that such cars may be used on a public server. The rules quoted above apply to every car converted here exactly as they apply to one converted by hand.
Lore-friendly vehicles are the low-risk choice
Lore-friendly vehicles use the fictional manufacturers of the GTA universe and original body designs. They are what the 2023 staff answer recommends, and gta5-mods.com has many of them; searching for "lore friendly" in the Vehicles section is the quickest way in. They convert the same way as any other add-on car, and the compatibility guide explains which mod types convert cleanly. You still need to check each author's own terms.
Frequently asked questions
Are real-brand cars banned on FiveM?
The current documents prohibit using third-party intellectual property and name "brands or logos". Staff said in October 2023 that all real-world vehicles must be removed. We found no official statement that permits them.
Is a debadged car allowed?
According to the October 2023 staff answer, debadging "alone does not mean your server is fully compliant". A forum administrator answered "No" to the same question in September 2025.
Does converting a car make it allowed?
No. Conversion changes the file layout, not the licence or the design.
Can I use any car on a private test server?
The agreement has no exception for private servers. We do not know how, or whether, such servers are checked.
Who is responsible for what is on the server?
Under Section 4 of the agreement, the server admin is responsible for server content that "you or others create, upload, or distribute" through it.
Not legal advice
This is not legal advice; the rules can change. Read the current Creator Platform License Agreement and the Mod Guidelines yourself before you decide, and ask a lawyer if the answer matters to your project.
